Gear
I don’t like obsessing over gear. Sure I’m interested in what was used on classic records, but I find chasing gear is a distraction and changing it is often disruptive. However, I have to admit to owning most classic basses at some point and to trawling vintage stores, around the world. That’s how I know it’s a distraction!
I think the most important thing is to really get to know a particular instrument and all it’s characteristics. That’s the most rewarding relationship, especially with guitars. Also find the best matches for the other links in the chain: strings, types of EQ, effects, etc. For me, the best gear related feeling is finding a good fit and formula, and sticking with it. However….. who said there’s only one fit and formula? Exactly… so here’s a little insight into the different bits of my “gear”.
